LIMERICK COUNTY, IRELAND

 

 THE TREATY COUNTY

         Limerick county is characterized by its green pastoral countryside and full of Norman, Viking and Celt heritance. 

There are many things to explore in Limerick, so you will need to visit it more than one day. Here you have some suggestions:

LOUGH GUR

       It is at the heart of a remarkable archaeological landscape of featuring sites that represent every major period of human history in Ireland. There are remains of occupation from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Early Christian, Medieval, Early Modern and Modern eras. 
Lough Gur has pet-friendly trails to do hiking with your humans, where you can be off-leashed. 

There is a fairy trail for children and a trail with over 100 stairs where you must be careful because it is a little slippery.


The visitor center displays multimedia exhibitions about the heritage, archeology and history of Lough Gur, starting from the Mesolithic Era to the 19th century.


Next to the visitor center, there is a nice playground area for children with amazing views.


If after walking you need some rest. You can stop at the SPECTACLES, the medieval ruins of three circular hut sites, located next to the Limerick's lake.


Very near this spot, you can find a picnic area by the lake, with tables and some shade from beautiful trees, where you and your human family can stop and eat something.
In this area, there is also space for you to play.

THE GREAT STONE CIRCLE AT GRANGE
      At a very short drive from Lough Gur, you can find The Great Stone Circle at Grange.
It is a big ring of continuous uprights and 12 large orthostats with 150 feet of diameter.

ASKEATON CASTLE AND FRANCISCAN FRIARY
          It is located by the river Deel to the north of the village Askeaton in Limerick County. It was founded in 1389 and it represents the medieval architecture. The friary's cloister as well as an statue of Saint Francis which is carved into the cloister arcade are still in very good conditions.

LIMERICK CITY

             It is the capital city of Limerick County, and the fourth largest city in Ireland after Dublin, Cork and Galway. It was built on the edge of the river Shannon. Its historical streets invite you to go for a walk with your human family and enjoy the sunset.


One of the main attractions in Limerick is the King John's Cattle. Visitants not only can see the castle but also try a series of Medieval Courtyard Games suitable for all ages.

Likewise, your humans can visit the Hunt Museum, to see the greatest collection of art and antiquities dating from the Neolithic to the 20th century.
